Dear Prime Minister Stephen Harper:

The Pro Democracy Movement of Iran (PDMI) is vehemently opposed to a petition that is spearheaded by the Iranian regime known apologists, anti-Semitic charlatans Eleanor and Ardeshir Ommani disguised as anti-war, woman rights and peace and justice activists, who clearly advocate for favorable policies towards the criminal regime.

For the record, as attested by the many letters your office has received, the Iranian Americans and Canadian-Americans applaud the Canadian government’s decisions to close down IRI embassy. We are hopeful that other nations will follow suit and extend such closure to the so called “Islamic Cultural Centers” that promote violence and serve as the training grounds for militant and extremist terror cells. The Islamic Republic is indeed a state sponsor of terrorism, violator of human rights and an anti-Semitic regime that aims to wipe Israel off the map. Aside from their absurd and irrational arguments made in Ommanis petition, an introduction to the misguided IRI apologists is in order:

Ardeshir Ommani is an Iranian-American who has been living in the United States for decades. He was a co-founder of the Iranian Students Association (a subsidiary of Muslim Students Association) which helped bring the Islamic Republic to power. He traveled to Iran during the 1979-1980 revolution and two years ago along with his wife Eleanor Ommani by the IRI invitation. Both the Ommani’s political stances match the Tudeh (Iranian Communist) Party in that they support ultra-leftist workers’ party political goals and yet defend the Khamenie’s­ theocratic and repressive regime.

Eleanor Ommani showcases herself as women’s rights activist and attempts to paint a picture of the Islamic Republic as a progressive society. Mrs. Ommani ignores the fact that the IRI continues to practice stoning for the crime of adultery, that the IRI regards women’s testimony in court as carrying only half the weight of that of a man, that women have virtually no rights to their children in cases of divorce, that all buses are segregated by gender (women sit in the rear), that the strict enforcement of the Islamic dress code requiring all women in Iran to be covered from head to ankle, and furthermore Mrs. Ommani conveniently overlooks the law passed by the Majlis that prohibits women from owning and running any business by themselves.

Both Ommanis consider the IRI terrorist proxy Hizbollah, as the innocent victim of Israeli aggression.

Ardeshir Ommani, like his wife Eleanor, pretends to defend worker’s rights in the U.S., which would seem to suggest that he be critical of the theocratic IRI regime which routinely suppresses Iranian worker’s rights. Just like the former Iranian communist Tudeh Party which backed the IRI regime, so does Ardeshir Ommani who describes it as a modern, independent nation fighting the imperialist United States! Like his wife, he claims that women are not debilitated in their social status in the Islamic Republic.

He also defends the regime’s nuclear program, calling it popular and the absolute right of the Iranian nation. It is abundantly clear that the regime is building nuclear weapons capable of reaching Europe and Israel. Also, his anti-war stance and opposition to the Iraq war should come as no surprise, he is following Khamenei’s party line which aims to have a free hand in turning Iraq into a carbon copy of Iran.

In 1977, the late Shah of Iran denounced what he deemed as an Unholy Alliance between the Red (Communists) and the Black (Muslim Religious Fundamentalists). In collusion with Islamists, the Tudeh Ommanis definitely shill for the Islamic Republic and like many other IRI useful idiots help push IRI blatant crimes against its own citizens under the rug and serve as agents of disinformation.
